Description
About Bacteriostatic Water
Bacteriostatic Water, commonly shortened to BAC Water, is a sterile aqueous laboratory diluent containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative.
The benzyl alcohol helps inhibit bacterial growth after the container has been accessed, distinguishing bacteriostatic water from preservative-free sterile water and making it useful in controlled research workflows involving repeated access to a prepared laboratory container.
Pronoia supplies Bacteriostatic Water in a 10ml format for dilution, reconstitution and preparation of compatible research materials.

Testing & Batch Documentation
Pronoia maintains batch traceability and supporting quality documentation for its Bacteriostatic Water supply.
- Batch-specific traceability maintained
- Batch-separated and labelled inventory
- Physical inventory routinely reconciled with digital stock records
- Product composition and supporting analytical documentation retained
- Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) documentation available
Where analytical, sterility or microbiological testing is reported for an individual batch, the applicable Certificate of Analysis should be treated as the authoritative reference for those results.
Research Context
Bacteriostatic Water is used as a preparation medium within controlled laboratory workflows where compatible research materials need to be diluted or brought into aqueous solution.
Typical laboratory applications include:
- Reconstitution of compatible lyophilised research materials
- Controlled laboratory dilution procedures
- Preparation of aqueous research solutions
- Experimental workflows requiring repeated access to a prepared container
The term bacteriostatic refers to the presence of benzyl alcohol, which helps inhibit bacterial growth. It does not replace appropriate aseptic laboratory technique or validated handling procedures.
Storage & Handling
Bacteriostatic Water should be stored according to the applicable product and batch documentation.
The current Pronoia specification uses controlled ambient laboratory storage in the region of 20–25°C.
The container should remain securely closed and protected from unnecessary contamination or unsuitable environmental exposure.
Appropriate aseptic laboratory technique should be used whenever the container is accessed, with any batch-specific storage or handling information taking precedence.
